Achala Priyadarshani, amputation of hand, medical negligence, Sri Lankan General Hospitals

W.K Achala Priyadarshani’s left hand was amputated on the 22nd January 2013 at the General Hospital, Colombo. She is currently a final year student at the faculty of law, at the University of Colombo. She was left-handed and it was this hand that was amputated.

Cause for Amputation

Achala was admitted to the Matara Hospital on 17th January 2013 to be treated for a fracture. It is claimed that due to the negligence of the medical staff of the Matara hospital when bandaging her arm for the aforementioned fracture the blood circulation to her arm had ceased resulting in fatally damaging the nerves in her left arm. Consequently she was transferred to the General Hospital in Colombo where her left arm was amputated.

Family’s Hope

Achala is the only member in her family to enter university. Her mother is a housemaid in Lebanon while her father and brother have no proper employment. She was the only hope of her family in order for them to overcome their many economic hardships.

Mobilising for a Cause

Achala’s batchmates are organizing a fund-raising campaign to get a prosthetic hand for Achala.

Please help us in collecting the required amount by donating to A/C no. 74274950 of Bank of Ceylon, Visakha Branch (Code No. 775) in the name of O. Siriwardhana or M.H Palkumbura. For further information contact Jayantha Dehiaththage -0718825329 or Lakmali Hemachandra- 0776021250.

“You are crazy”

beliefs, crazy, middle-ground

“You are crazy!” someone told me. I am sure that person has a lot of knowledge in psychology to make such a worthy comment. Then again, isn’t it always good to be called “crazy” than “boring”? I mean many of those who were considered crazy in their time, are considered quite the opposite today, when the truth be revealed on their claims once thrown to be hallucinations.

So let me be crazy, and make a small change where I can, rather than be one of those people who advise me to pick the middle ground, and advice me in changing my perceptions as it befit the majority!

Coco Veranda, Sarath Sathiamoorthy

Today I said goodbye to a friend. A friend I could talk and complain to about life. A friend who would hear me through, and tell me, “have you really thought this through?”

I remember walking into Coco, and bumping into him, and he the busy person would still find the time to come and check on how I was, how the baby was doing, and complain about how I keep going MIA ever too often. Every time my number changed, he would still find me online, and check whether life was well, I was sane, and things around me were intact.

I will miss you Sarath. Specially on those coffee days, when your smile won’t around.
